The Facts About Your Credit Score

Your credit score is one of the most important numbers you have. Not only does it affect your interest rates when applying for a loan, it can also impact your insurance rates, certain job prospects and even your chances of renting an apartment. As a result, improving one’s credit has become a multi-million dollar industry.

What’s your credit score?

Your credit score indicates to lenders and other businesses how much of a credit risk you pose if they allow you to borrow money. The Fair Isaac Company (FICO®) uses an algorithm that takes into account 30 different factors within your credit report to arrive at a score from 300-850. The higher the score, the better the credit risk you are to lenders. Other credit reporting agencies, such as Experian, Equifax and TransUnion, calculate their own credit scores within their own ranges; however, the FICO® score is the standard that lenders use when they pull your credit score.

Improve Your Credit Now

Although it’s easy to become obsessed with improving your credit score, especially if you’re getting ready to apply for a loan, it’s best to focus on improving your overall credit report. After all, a great credit history will help to boost your credit score.

Review your credit report once a year. Type annualcreditreport.com directly into your address baron your browser for a free copy of your credit report from each of the major credit reporting companies. Although many websites will promise you a free copy of your credit report, they may also lure you into credit-monitoring services that you may not need. Since you’re entitled to a free credit report each year, you may not need to pay a third party to monitor your credit for you.
Report any errors that you find. If you see a mistake, contact the credit reporting company in writing and be sure to include copies of any supporting documentation.
Eliminate debt. Since reducing debt takes time, set short-term goals to tackle each debt, starting with the debt that has the highest interest rate. And once you’ve eliminated your debt, try to use less than 35% of your available credit.

Allure Magazine Doesn’t Just Talk Fashion, They Talk Handshakes

We all know that a firm handshake is crucial to any business encounter, and now a new study explains why. Aside from demonstrating good manners, a handshake can also diminish the effect of other nonverbal communication that might cause a negative perception. In the study, led by Sanda Dolcos, a psychology researcher at the University of Illinois, 18 men and women watched brief animated videos of two people greeting each other in a work setting. Every time, the viewers evaluated the apparent competence and trustworthiness of the person acting as the host. An open, inviting posture earned high ratings, but more so when combined with a handshake. And even among those who went on to cross their arms or scowl, an initial handshake minimized the bad impression.

Susan G Komen is offering an internship – Missions Programs Intern-Race Season – Student Intern, from August 2013- November 2013.

The basic function of this position will be to contribute to the overall affiliate mission programs efforts of the Inland Empire Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Some of the primary responsibilities include;

Serving as a knowledgeable resource for breast health information and services in the Affiliate service area to the general public, community organizations, medical facilities, and health professionals.
Assisting in developing and implementing activities that address the gaps in uninsured/underinsured populations in service area through education and outreach efforts, as proposed in the Community Profile and set forth through a strategic plan.
Working collaboratively with additional Mission Programs Coordinators to participate in appropriate community-sponsored educational program and appropriate Affiliate education initiatives within the Affiliate service area

What Networking Really Says

For a motivating read try, “Give and Take,” by Adam Grant.

Those that are generous with time connections and expertise tend to fare best in their professional lives, so long as they also hold ambitious goals for advancing their own interests, says “Inc.” magazine about this book. If you read nothing else make sure to read the second Chapter which recasts networking as a humanistic enterprise motivated by kindness rather than a mechanism for getting ahead.

Well, that’s saying something about you Valley Young Professionals out there at every VYPER and committee meeting, wouldn’t you say? This book assesses the motive of a net-worker, as seeking potential partners, employees and relationships. It gives the approach to success a new light, in setting aside egos and helping others achieve greatness which in turn creates an environment where everyone works harder.

Great suggestion for a motivating read and if VYP was still hosting “Think Tanks” this would be at the top of our list. Bringing back the importance of networking and stepping out from behind your screen shields.

Have You Heard of KickStarter?

It was brought to my attention during a Temecula City Welcome event presentation by a Temecula Chamber member, who started a local business and used ingenious business savvy tricks to do so, Kickstarter being one of them. Kickstarter is a site where people can pledge money to support other people’s creative projects. The pledgers in no way own any part of your business or project they just support your ideas and dreams by pledging money, as little or as much as the levels you set up. The project creators set the fund goals and deadlines. The project creator must raise all of the funded goal by the set deadline or they don’t receive anything at all.

BUT they say 44% of project developers are successful!
